Todd S asked:
I had a message on my phone and so I called the 1-800 number, it answered the IRS. Evidently they called me, could it be an audit, should I get a hold of a tax attorney? I think it is for real. I file my taxes every year, although I haven’t yet.

Relax. IRS always sends questions by mail.
They don’t call, somebody wants to ***** with your head.
If you have a unpaid tax bill and haven’t paid it, IRS may try to call you before taking enforced collection action.
Dear TS: Never heard of this. Keep the 800 number and if this continues call 800-829-1040 to verify the call and the request. Have you moved recently? Is your mail being forwarded properly? Has anything changed in your life in the past couple years? If none of these apply you are probably being scammed.

IRS does call, some tax examiners do call when working on your tax return, if more information is needed they are to make two attempts to contact the taxpayers by phone, before they issue a letter. Some tax examiners prefer not to call they just send the letter and a phone number to call and a fax number to fax the information. Some tax examiners don’t have the time to call because they have to sign on to the 1-800 number to answer calls.
When you called the 1-800 number what were you told?
