I know small claims has a maximum of 00. I have a construction drugs store malpractice case against an engineering firm. Damage is about k. Can I file a claim in a civil court for that amount without an attorney?

You never have to be represented by an attorney. You might want to discuss the matter with an attorney, however. Yes, an attorney is going to take a portion of your winnings, but the odds of those winnings being substantial are better with a lawyer who knows what he is doing in both settlement and trial. The other side is almost certainly going to have a lawyer who is not going to cut you any slack for being unrepresented.
You can file for any amount. I would advise you to hire an attorney. An attorney would give your case credibility and could get you a larger settlement or a larger amount if you win.
